A big use of electricity in homes is lighting. Think of some ways you can save money by changing habits when it comes to using the lights in your home. Did you think of turning off lights in rooms that are not being used? How about using only the lights you need for the tasks that you are doing, instead of lighting the whole room?
Most light bulbs used in homes are incandescent bulbs, which were invented by Thomas Edison over 100 years ago. They have changed very little since then. These bulbs are not energy efficient. Have you ever noticed how a light bulb gets hot after its been on for a while? About 90% of the energy used is given off as heat rather than light, and thats a lot of wasted energy.
Instead of using traditional incandescent light bulbs, consider using a newer kind of light bulb, the Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL). Unlike the usual fluorescent bulb, which is shaped like a long tube, a CFL can screw directly into most lamps and ceiling fixtures. CFLs are a little more expensive than incandescent bulbs, but they can last up to ten times longer and use 75% less energy.
How much water do you use in the shower? Imagine how much water you could save if you changed your habits and took fewer showers, shorter showers, or just turned the water down when youre lathering up or washing your hair. How much can you save by using a showerhead that uses less water? Can a High-Efficiency Showerhead really feel as good as a normal showerhead? Sure it can. The High-Efficiency Showerhead in your kit will clean you as good as, or better, than your old one while helping you save water, energy, and money on utility bills.
The LimeLite® Night Light is designed to replace your current energy draining night lights. It uses abaout 1/100th of the power used by a standard 7-Watt night light and only costs about $0.02 a year to operate. The soothing glow will not disturb your sleep or your night vision. It is great to use in your childs room or in a hallway or bathroom so you can see where you are walking at night without turning on a light.
When you think about the water you use in your home its also important to think about the amount of energy you are using to heat it so you can wash dishes, do laundry, and take a warm shower. Heating water is one of the largest uses of energy in your home. Since you can’t stop using hot water, there are two things you can do to reduce the amount of energy used. Adjust the temperature on your water heater and use less water!
Many people think that setting your water heater on the hottest setting will heat the water more quickly. The fact is that by heating your water at the hottest setting, all you are doing is over-heating it and wasting energy. Over heating water can also be a safety hazard in your home. Setting your water heater correctly can help you save money on your utility bill.

Use the FilterTone Alarm on any air filter. When you have dirty filters, more energy is used to heat and cool your home. Therefore, energy and money are wasted when a dirty air filter is used. When your filter becomes dirty, you will hear a tone reminding you to change your dirty air filter.
In addition to reducing your energy costs, changing the filters can extend the life of your heating and cooling units and keep them operating properly.
Each appliance may not use much energy by itself, but together they can account for a large chunk of your total energy use. You may not think of them as significant energy users, but there are ways to reduce the energy use of refrigerators, freezers, ovens and ranges, dishwashers, televisions, computers, and other appliances in your home. The easiest way to reduce energy use in appliances is to change your habits. The Reminder Stickers and Magnet will help you remember to change your habits. The PSO Power Saving Kits included Quick Start Guide will help you identify where to place reminders throughout your home.
